Every spring, Cordoba is transformed into a spectacle of flowers, music and joy with the May Crosses<\/strong>the first major event of the May Holiday<\/em>.<\/p>\n

30 April to 4 May 2025<\/u>The city's squares and courtyards are filled with decorated crosses, bars with traditional tapas and an atmosphere that attracts locals and visitors alike.<\/p>\n

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know to make the most of the Cruces de Mayo.<\/p>\n

What are the May Crosses in Cordoba?<\/h2>\n

The Cruces de Mayo is a popular festival that combines religious and pagan traditions, celebrating the arrival of spring with crosses decorated with flowers, flowerpots and manila shawls.<\/p>\n

Organised by associations, brotherhoods and collectives, these crosses are set up in the following places neighbourhoods such as San Basilio<\/em>, Santa Marina<\/em> or the historical centre<\/em>creating a festive atmosphere with sevillanas music and Cordovan gastronomy.<\/p>\n

By 2025, 53 entities will take part in the Municipal May Crosses Competition<\/strong>The three categories are: historic city centre, modern areas and enclosed areas.<\/p>\n

The festival coincides with the 1 May bank holiday, making it the perfect opportunity to enjoy a colourful long weekend.<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What is the origin of the May Crosses?<\/h3>\n

The May Crosses<\/strong> have roots going back to the 20th century, although some historians suggest a pre-Christian origin adapted by Christianity.<\/p>\n

Officially, they are associated with 3 May, the day on which Saint Helena discovered the Vera Cruz in the year 326.<\/p>\n

In C\u00f3rdoba, the competition began in 1953, when the crosses left the courtyards to compete in public squares, marking the beginning of a tradition that has lasted until today.<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Battle of Flowers: The highlight of the May Crosses<\/h2>\n

On Sunday 4th May, the May Crosses share the limelight with the Battle of the Flowers, a vibrant parade through the streets of Cordoba.<\/p>\n

Floats decorated with thousands of carnations parade along Rep\u00fablica Argentina Street and Paseo de la Victoria, while women dressed in flamenco dresses throw flowers to the public, who respond with a shower of petals.<\/p>\n

It is estimated that more than 80,000 carnations are thrown, creating an unforgettable spectacle.<\/p>\n
